"Burnt Roots"

Since October of 2013, an epidemic caused by the xylella fastidiosa bacteria has started to decimate the olive tree population in my home region of Puglia, in Southern Italy.
10 years later, science has not yet been able to find a cure for the disease, and the only solution seems to be violent eradication. But the further you look into this issue the more questions start arising- Has intensive farming and an indiscriminate use of herbicides brought us here?
Uncovering the tale of a history of struggle between local farmers and the central government, and of modern science versus ancient wisdom, “Burnt Roots” becomes an exploration of roots and identity inspired by the sounds and impressions of the Italian countryside and its people.

Ella Zirina

"Intertwined"

Guitarist and composer Ella Zirina wrote her debut album, Intertwined, in residency at BIMHUIS Productions. The album’s beating heart are Ella’s improvisations, which are woven into a brimming musical bouquet, together with her trio and guest appearances by Tineke Postma. The residency gave Zirina the opportunity to compose for string quartet, bringing her music to awe-inspiring heights. On the album, the guitarist cycles through feeling misunderstood in a male-dominated jazz environment, fighting back, pedaling through periods of hopelessness and finding respite under summer sunsets in her home country, Latvia.

Federica Lorusso

"Outside Introspections"

‘Outside Introspections’ is the album debut by Federica Lorusso. A title that refers to the emotional process of moving abroad. Federica left Italy for the Netherlands to follow her jazz heart. "Now I have found my place and I feel like I belong here, but in the songs there is still a sort of nostalgia towards my home country, and that’s also why it is very introspective music. I think that this is also reflected in the recording process of the album itself, that has been entirely recorded in the Netherlands with other Italian musicians, even though this wasn’t really a conscious decision. I already knew some of them, but everything came naturally.. I think of ‘Outside Introspections’ as a sort of bridge between my home country and the country that I now call home".
